Chemists from Annasaheb Awate College, Manchar are developing more efficient and sustainable chemistries by exploring the structure, properties and reactions of organic compounds and materials. New reagents and catalysts are enabling greener industrial processes. Growing interest in medicinal chemistry focused on the development of new product having pharmaceutical importance in collaborations with different pharmaceutical industries and institutions. These cutting-edge efforts build on a strong departmental history in organic synthesis. Departmental research team also focused on synergistic surface basicity enhancement effect for doping of transition metals in nano-crystalline catalysts towards one pot organic transformations. Efforts are given for the synthesis, structural and electrical conduction of some dual doped semiconductor oxides nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation of Victoria blue-B and Brilliant yellow under solar light irradiation.

Chemistry department is one of the biggest departments in the college campus. The area of the department is 4000 sq.ft and located at ground floor. For the reference work it is having access to most of e-journals and books. Availability of computer and laptops with internet connection gives boost in the research activities. Laboratories of the chemistry department are well equipped with equipments like IR, potentiometer, fluorophotometer, rotavapor, photochemical reactor, nephelometer, turbidometer, muffle furnace, refractometer. Fuming hoods are placed for performing most of the reactions. Sufficient spaces between adjacent workstations and laboratory benches or facilities (e.g., storage cabinets with partitions) are available so that incompatible chemicals/gases (waste and non-waste) can be physically separated and stored. Chemical inventory is maintained and use projection provided by the Principal Investigator to the project and EH&S. Ventilated cabinets with electrical receptacles and sound insulation are installed for vacuum pumps.
